WPT Doyle Brunson Classic Underway

After days of waiting and some high quality side events, the main attraction of the Five Diamond World Poker Classic, the World Poker Tour Doyle Brunson Classic is underway in Las Vegas. Tournament director Jack McClelland announced the tournament rules as usual, but then asked the entire room to observe a moment of silence in memory of Chip Reese.

'This week we lost one of our great poker players, Chip Reese. In honour of Chip I'd like to have a moment of silence, if everyone would be quiet for a moment.' Thirty seconds later and Jack summed it up for the poker world; 'Chip, we'll miss you.'

Soon it was to be business as usual at the Bellagio, with 277 players having registered for Day 1A. One of the tables which developed later in the day gave a good indication of how tough this tournament will be. ‘Table 7’ containing another bunch of tough cookies; Alan Goehring, Lamar Wilkinson, Ralph Perry, Daniel Alaei, David Levi, Eric Seidel, Chad Brown, Peter Feldman and Joe Tehan. No unknowns here, just rock solid poker.

Of course, with so many big names in the field there were sure to be some big name eliminations and those included: Paul Wasicka, Sorel Mizzi, Justin Bonomo, John Juanda, David Williams, Shaun Sheikhan and Lee Watkinson. Come the end of the day, one well known name had risen to the top, with John ‘World’ Hennigan closing the day out with 188,000 and the chip lead overnight.

Other pros in the top ten include: John Gale (126,000), Hoyt Corkins (114,000), Erik Siedel (108,475), Ralph Perry (102,000), Greg Mueller (98,625) and Amir Vahedi (89,625). Day 1b has a lot to live up to.
