APPT Sydney: Day 1b Done, and Scotty Nguyen In Contention

The Star City Hotel and Casino in Sydney is currently hosting the Pokerstars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tour Grand Final. Among the big name players who are playing are 1998 World Champion Scotty Nguyen, Tony Hachem (brother of WSOP 2006 Winner Joe), Jeff Lisandro and Lee ‘Final Table’ Nelson.

One player who had a rollercoaster of a day was Van Marcus, with chips flowing to and from his stack. In the first hand which saw Van Marcus sending his chips away, he re-raised before the flop after one player moved all in and found one other caller. Marcus then bet enough in the dark to put the other player all in, a bet which was duly called. After the flop came 5h-7d-2s, Marcus was a long way ahead:

Marcus – Qs-Qc

Opponent 1 – 6s-6d

Opponent 2 – As-5s.

The turn and river weren’t nice for the pocket queens though, with the 4d and 3h making both of his opponents runner-runner straights. He soon recovered the chips on the next hand though after selling the ‘I’m on tilt’ line well whilst holding pocket aces. Marcus ended the day in mid-position.

The folks in Sydney were flocking around Scotty though, and as always he put on a show for them, finishing the day with one of the biggest stacks. One key hand near the end of the day saw Nguyen make a great call with pocket nines on a board showing Th-3h-6s-5c. His opponent, Terris Preston, pushed all in on the turn and was found with pocket eights after Scotty made the call, at the same time ending Preston’s tournament.

Henrik Gwinner is the overnight chip leader with 390,400, with Scotty Nguyen on 250,400.
