PE teacher wins Asian poker final

An Australian PE teacher has used maths skills to win the final of the inaugural Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT), making him $1 million in just three days.

Grant Levy, from Penrith in Sydney, usually teaches PE at Saint Dominic's College in Kingswood, but after some clever mathematics decided the odds were too good not to give the poker tournament a go.

Turning a $6,000 buy-in into the $1 million top prize, Mr Levy not only had to have good luck, but a lot of skill and his own personal coach.

The 28-year-old credits his older brother with spurring him on from the sidelines, which helped him stay focussed and conquer a field of 561 that included four former World Series of Poker (WSOP) champions.

Mr Levy played poker online for two years until he took the step of walking into the Star City Casino to register for the major tournament.

The PE teacher now plans to join the ranks of other WSOP winners and is heading to Las Vegas next year to try his hand.

However, Mr Levy will not turn his back on the kids. "I love teaching. It's a passion. I love poker, it's a great hobby," he told Australia's Daily Telegraph. "I get so excited when I sit down to play. People can lose passion for their jobs and I don't want poker to become work."

Perhaps Mr Levy has been taking tips from the school's maths teacher, as he brands poker a mental and "mathematical" game.
