Dragon claims top poker title

David 'The Dragon' Pham has won the Card Player Media Poker Player of the Year (POY) for the second time since it was established a decade ago.

There was really only one man to win it after his victory in the No Limit Texas Hold'em event at the Five Diamond World Poker Classic on December 5th netted him $279,000 and the extra points he gained meant no one could catch him up.

Pham cashed 18 times at poker tourneys this year, finishing on the final table 11 times. His total winnings in 2007 for tournament poker exceeded $1.8 million and he won four major events.

The Dragon was leading on points all the way since August and finished the year with 6,562 points.

Howvever, J C Tran was only 814 points behind for a second place finish, followed by Jonathan Little, Scott Clements and William Edler.

"The Player of the Year race was established in 1997 to honor and recognize outstanding achievement in poker," stated Barry Shulman, of Card Player Media. "The POY point system is based on poker tournament finishes throughout the year and is a benchmark used throughout the poker industry to measure accomplishments on the felt. We at Card Player Media would like to congratulate David Pham for his exceptional accomplishment."

Past POY winners include Daniel Negreanu and Michael Mizrachi, but the only other players to win more than once were TJ Cloutier with two wins and Men The Master Nguyen, who has won four times.
