Top Player A Rarity In Online World

According to a piece in America’s Star Tribune newspaper, revenues from online gambling may top $18 billion for the past year although the average player is still more likely to become an addict rather than rolling in the money.

The Minnesota newspaper quotes consulting firm Christiansen Capital Advisors, which specializes in the analysis of professional gambling, and a spokesperson for Gamblers Anonymous, who stated that three to five percent of gamblers are known to eventually become addicts with the actual number possibly being three times as high.

It quoted the National League of Poker’s estimate that thousands of people across the United States profit from online play including Jared Hubbard, a 23-year-old professional online poker player.

Ranked as the world’s best player in the six-man single table sit-n-go tournaments, Hubbard is a member of PokerStars.com’s Supernova Elite club, a ranking so difficult to achieve that it currently has only four members.

“He is one of the two best sit-n-go players and without question the best six-man sit-and-go player in the world,” said Brandon Misfud, a fellow professional player.

“It takes dedication, commitment and a lot of practice to be as good as he is.”

A former student at Winona State University, Hubbard stated that he began to play seriously after learning that he was to be made redundant from his day job. Hubbard was then making about $100 an hour playing poker and decided to postpone his university studies in order to play full time.

“I love the game, the money and the freedom,” said Hubbard.

“I mean, find me another job where I can enjoy what I’m doing, make around $200 an hour, have the freedom of making my own schedule and take as much time off as I want, whenever I want.”
