Poker year gets underway

The first major poker tournament of 2008 is up and running at the Radisson Hotel, overlooking Galway Bay in Ireland.

This year's Party Poker Irish Poker Championship will see over 400 poker players battling it out to take a chunk of the million dollar prize pool, with a number of high profile contestants expected to turn out for the event.

Testing how their poker playing skills have fared following the festive period will be the likes of Ireland's own Ciaran O'Leary and Padraig Parkinson, as well as WSOP Tournament of Champions winner and Party Poker spokesperson Mike Sexton.

A number of online qualifiers have made the trip to Galway for the event, which will conclude with the final round being held on Tuesday January 8th.

The festival began on January 3rd, although the poker itself only got underway on January 4th, so it is no wonder that so many people look forward to participating in this event every year.

In 2006, the Irish Poker Championship broke the record for the largest ever No Limit Texas Hold'em poker event to be held anywhere in Europe.
