High Stakes Winners and Losers Unveiled

Online poker tracking site Highstakesdb.com has monitored the biggest games on the net, and this week they released the compiled list of movers and shakers in 2007. The lists themselves give a valuable – albeit partial – insight into the world of high stakes online poker, and some of the findings are surprising.

The two biggest lists on the site are the results for Pot Limit Omaha on Full Tilt and the high stakes No Limit Hold’em on the same site. Biggest winners in No Limit Hold’em include pr1nnyraid, (+$2,191,671), Urindanger (+$1,276,276), and Brian Townsend, aka sbrugby, who made $1,158,151. Of the big name names from the Full Tilt stable, only Phil Ivey showed a sizeable profit, up $1.1m for the year. Ivey was also up $885k on Omaha, meaning he was just under $2m up across these two games on the site.

What was surprising was how erratic some of the results of the best known players have been. David Benyamine was a loser to the tune of $1.5m on Hold’em, but made around $2.6m playing Omaha. Gus Hansen was down just short of $695k on Hold’em, whilst Mike Matusow – famous for some volatile internet sessions – managed to drop $350k.

Special mention goes to notaima, who lost well over $6m on the two lists, being the biggest donator on both charts. Let’s just hope he can afford it.

Whilst the figures are only partial, it does raise interesting questions about the various skill sets employed in live and online play, and how the transition outwardly appears to be smoother for online players switching to brick and mortar play.
