Pints reward for student's poker win

A local student has won the Irish Poker Championship and confirmed that he would be having more than a few bevies to celebrate.

Twenty-eight-year-old Jude Ainsworth, who is doing a Phd in Biochemistry won the Head's Up against smooth customer Michael McCool to watch away with the top prize of 180,000 euros.

The Claregalway lad beat a strong field of 298 at this perennially popular poker tourney.

Big names such as Mike Sexton, Ciaran O'Leary and Robert Williamson III could not beat the Irish brainbox as he took home the title.

The father-of-one promised that he would be celebrating in true Irish tradition.

"It doesn't get much better than this," he said. "To say that we are going to sink a few pints is an understatement!

"I couldn't ask for much more than this, I've had great support all the way through. I was planning taking a break after my Phd at GNUIG in Galway. This makes everything a lot easier!"

He said he planned to take his wife on holiday and also wanted to take part in more tournaments, even setting his sights on the World Series Of Poker (WSOP) in the summer.
