Online Poker Chipped Up in 2007

You’d have expected online poker to have a bad year in 2007. The USA tightened online gambling restrictions, companies connected to online gambling in the US were hauled through the courts, there was the Absolute cheating scandal and talk of multi-account users, as well as European nations trying to shut the industry out.

Despite all of the hurdles, the online poker industry managed to thrive as companies expanded around the world. The number of milestones reached through the year is testament in itself. CelebPoker hit the half-billion hand mark not even one month after running promotions celebrating the achievement. PokerStars hit one billion hands dealt in May. What was even more vindicating in the PokerStars promotion is that the lucky hand was dealt on those smallest of cash tables, the 1˘/2˘ game, netting the hand winner another $100,000.

Bodog Poker made it to one billion hands as well, this time in November, that despite a hit after it lost its original domain name.

Other sites celebrating in 2007 were PKR who had their one millionth customer registered, Mansion who were prospering so much that they offered $11m in guaranteed prize pools a month, and Titan, who offered $10m a month.

With one of the biggest cash games to hit their site, Betfair are showing they too have ridden the storm, whilst PokerStars also announced record number of players playing at the tables simulatenously late in the year.

2007: the year when poker was the underdog and it won. Roll on 2008.
