Online Poker On The Rise

According to figures from the online poker tracking site PokerScout.com, Internet poker has had a flying start to the year with most of the major networks recording all-time highs in the number of simultaneous real-money players.

PokerScout.com stated that Monday witnessed a new industry-wide peak player record, exceeding the previous record of 95,000 concurrent real-money players. In addition, the early days of 2008 saw poker networks such as PokerStars, the Ongame Network, Everest Poker, International Poker Network, PKR and Ladbrokes all set individual all-time records.

PokerStars announced that it reached a record in late-December of 20,000 concurrent players, which it exceeded again last week with a peak of over 23,000 real-money participants.

The Ongame Network passed the 10,000 concurrent players mark for the first time on Monday while Everest Poker stated that it had set its own new record of 7,600 simultaneous real-money poker players.

PokerScout.com’s figures dispel rumours widely circulated late last year that the market for online poker was in decline and suggest a surge in the game’s popularity, giving online poker operators much room for optimism in 2008.
