Tuesday 15th January 2008 Aussie Millions Main Event: Days 1a and 1b Finished
The main event at the 2008 Aussie Millions is underway in Melboure and already there are some big names on the rail. Leading the way from Day 1A is a certain Irishman who many know from his run in the 2005 World Series of Poker – Andy Black, whilst Day 1B is headed up by a man we all know, Phil Ivey.
The feature table proved to be a poker graveyard during Day 1A, with Jimmy Fricke ending his quest to go one better than his second place finish last time around. First crippled by Matt Sexton’s pocket Aces, he was then forced to move all in with Kd-Jd only to run into Aces again.
Other big stars who joined Fricke on the sidelines in Day 1A were Liz Lieu, Brandon Adams, Gavin Smith, Mel Judah, Lee Watkinson, Mike Sexton and Steve Zolotow. Jennifer Harman was also elimated late in the day when her AQ was called by – yes, Aces. Seems like the dealers down-under know how to deal some premium hands!
Day 1B saw a wave of Full Tilt stars take their seats: defending champion Gus Hansen, Phil Ivey, Erick Lindgren, Chris Ferguson and Clonie Gowan were all in action. To prove the event is a ‘Who’s Who’ of poker, here’s some of the others who made it:
WSOP Main Event Winners Joe Hachem and Dan Harrington, Annie Duke, Eddy Scharf, Joe Sebok, David Chiu, Kevin ‘BeL0WaB0Ve’ Saul, Erik ‘Erik123’ Sagstrom, Karina Jett, Barney Boatman, Nenad Medic, Max Pescatori, Rafe Furst, Michael Binger, Sorel ‘imper1um’ Mizzi, Paul Wasicka, Phil Laak, Jeff Madsen, Adam Junglen, Perry Friedman, Yevgeny Timoshenko, Marc Karam, Kristy Gazes and Sol Bergren.
Two of the best looking ladies in the tournament are already out though. Shannon Elizabeth’s pocket sevens were called by Phil Laak with….yes, Aces, whilst Laak’s better looking half Jennifer Tilly was unlucky to see her flopped full house outdrawn on the river by the better full house of Hiroshi Shimamura.
At the time of writing, play is just wrapping up for Day 1B, but Andy Black led the chip counts from Day 1A on 167,000, whilst Phil Ivey has passed the 200,000 mark late in Day 1B. Dan Harrington is out, along with Gus Hansen, Phil Laak and Chris Ferguson, whilst home favourites Jeff Lisandro and Joe Hachem are near the top of the chip counts.
