Turtles Get Shelled

This game sets up as a good old fashion a** kicking. To be quite honest, that is. Oh so far the previously high powered Maryland offense has fallen and oh so gnarly the Seminoles defense has been this season. Throw in the fact FSU has absolutely owned this series both straight up and vs. the number in years past, against much tougher Terrapin editions no less, and the call here is an easy one. Let us quickly review the finer points.

Since their opening week loss vs. Miami, the Noles have ripped off six straight wins and have climbed their way back into the BCS picture. Florida State is currently ranked No. 5 in the computers, which is good enough for a BCS Bowl if nothing changes. FSU’s offense has benefited greatly since benching the perennially underachieving Chris Rix in favor of talented sophomore QB Wyatt Sexton. And while not as explosive as previous FLA ST. units, the Seminoles get the job done producing 28 PPG, behind a perfectly balanced 194 to 190, passing yards to rushing yards, ratio.

It is not, however, Florida State’s offense that has them 5th in the BCS Standings. No, it is the fact the Seminoles rank 8th in the nation in total defense yielding a mere 266.6 YPG, 9th in the nation in scoring defense (13.4 PPG!!!) and 2nd in the nation in run defense (68.9 YPG on 2.1 YPC!!!). What makes this all the more compelling is that FSU has played an extremely tough schedule thus far, void of a single team we’d deem a patsy. Moreover, Bowden’s Boys have outgained each of their past six opponents by margins of 62, 189, 147, 79, 197 and 344 yards, respectively.

This last paragraph is not good news for the Turtles’ chances today. After all, Friedgen’s club checks in at 3-4 both SU and ATS overall, as well as 2-2 SU and a perfect 0-4 ATS in previously formidable College Park. What is most astounding about this story is that one of the smartest offensive minds in the game, Ralph Friedgen, lays claim to one of the most pathetic offensive attacks among BCS schools and certainly among the ACC. To illustrate, consider the fact Maryland has scored 7 points, 3 points and 7 points in their past three games, mustering a whopping 122.3 total yards per contest during this span. Those are simply unimaginable figures.

The Terps have been a scoring machine in recent years, averaging 31 or more points per game in each of the past three seasons. Maryland has won 10 or more games each of the past three years as well, registering a cumulative 31-8 SU record during this span. Why we are so compelled by the Terrapins past success is that in spite of it, they have been slapped around by FSU for about twelve years running. In fact, the Seminoles are 12-0 SU the past twelve meetings, 8-1 ATS the past nine meetings and a perfect 5-0 ATS the past five meetings. Even more interesting is that the average margin of victory in the past five meetings has been a whopping 32.8 PPG, with none coming by less than three touchdowns. When all is said and done, FSU will put the hammer down on the Turtles today.
