Virtual Vegas For Researchers

In Canada, researchers from the University of Guelph have developed a 360-degree panoscope that allows them to take virtual walks through 17 Las Vegas casinos in order to better investigate problem gambling.

The researchers developed the tool after receiving less than enthusiastic responses for co-operation from Las Vegas gambling organisations. They have been commissioned by the Ontario Problem Gambling Research Centre to study the reasons why many gamblers slip into a trance-like state and bet beyond their means.

The researchers have also constructed a room with eight programmable slot machines with Karen Finlay, head of the four person team, stating that the research is useful in pressing governments and casinos to make changes that encourage responsible gambling and in helping counsellors who treat problem gamblers to be better informed.
