Monday 21st January 2008 Julian Thew Wins GUKPT Walsall, Manchester, London, Newcastle…
OK, we're just kidding, but Julian Thew is starting to resemble something from a comic. Perhaps he has x-ray vision, or telepathic powers. Maybe he can re-order the cards using sheer mind power. That or he’s just a damned good poker player who is running very, very hot.
Thew won this weekend’s GUKPT Brighton, winning £86,800 and making this his second title on the tour in six months. Not only has he won the two GUKPT crowns in that time, but he has also won the EPT Baden as well as cashing in the Pokerstars Caribbean Adventure. His career earnings now are over $2m, with $1.6m coming in the last year.
This time around, Thew outlasted 279 other players in the £1,000 Main Event. As if the £86,800 wasn’t enough, he has also won his seat into the £3,000 Grand Final, and the Champion of Champions Freeroll. At this rate, he’ll be playing ten-handed against himself.
The final hand saw Thew fighting it out heads-up with Londoner Karim Louis in a battle which took two hours. Louis held a 2-to-1 advantage on Thew but Thew wasn’t to be denied, firstly grinding the stick into a chip lead, then winning a classic coin-flip when his pocket fives held up against Louis’ A-Q.
The ‘Watch Julian Thew Win Again Tour’ rolls into Walsall next. Let’s see if the man can make it a hat-trick.
