Thursday 24th January 2008 Poker: Doin it for the kids
Although winning the latest charity poker tournament might have netted one lucky punter a trip for two to the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas, the real beneficiaries of this particular game were the children of Benton County.
At the Ice House this weekend the second annual Texas Hold'em poker tournament was held to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Benton County, which holds after-school activities and summer camps.
But although it sounds like small potatoes, around 100 poker fans turned up at the event, which is sponsored by some top US brand names. Poker players covered the floor of the Ice House in a bid to win the WSOP trip, a 42-inch high-definition television or a laptop computer, although this is one poker tourney in which the players couldn't cash.
But the 8,000 children who use the Boys and Girls Club of Benton County received over $15,000 of funding as a result of the event. "Everyone here is having a lot of fun, but you can't overlook what this means for this organisation," Pat Kunnecke, a participant, told NWA News. Degree, a Unilever brand, sponsors the WSOP, but wanted to put its name to this good cause, too.
"It's on a much smaller scale here and it's all for a great organization, but our company didn't think twice about sponsoring this event," said Bob Hirn, Degree's director of sales.
