Monday 4th February 2008 Gran warns young poker genius
After Mike McDonald won almost $1.4 million in the European Poker Tour (EPT) German Open, his granny has warned him to stay away from money-grabbing girls.
The 18-year-old has been told by his loving gran to beware of goldiggers after his poker fortune.
"Before this, I was just the guy who played poker online all day," McDonald told the Record. "Now people will think, 'That's the guy I saw on TV win a bunch of money'. That's kind of cool."
However his mother, Patti, said his grandmother is concerned that the extra attention will lead to unscrupulous girls making a beeline for her grandson.
"His grandma says, 'Tell Michael to be careful if some girls start paying too much attention to him'," she said.
As McDonald is still too young to play competition games in the US and some of Canada, he has been jetting off to poker tourneys overseas, stopping off at London, Prague and Macau to try his luck.
"He's basically living out of a suitcase, but he's chasing his dream," Patti said.
But it seems that it is not just the ladies he has to keep an eye on, as the young poker player revealed that his pals already have plans for his money.
"My friends want me to buy a Lamborghini," McDonald said. "But I don't want to go all-out. That's not really who I am."
McDonald was tutored by Steve Paul-Ambrose, a fellow uni student who won $1.3 million at a Bahamas poker tournament two years ago.
