Baseball star hosts charity poker match

Royce Clayton has hosted the inaugural Poker Celebrity Bowl, which raised $40,000 for charity.

The Major League Baseball (MLB) shortstop hosted the poker event at Harrah's Ak-Chin Casino Resort in Phoenix, Arizona.

US athletes, poker pros and famous faces from Hollywood all turned out to try their hands or offer support, Cardplayer website reports.

MLB pitcher Kyle Lohse and NBA star Bob Lanier were there for the sports stars as well as former NFL player MarTay Jenkins.

For the poker pros, Clonie Gowen and Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson made the final table, although Jamie Gold, Erik Seidel and Michael Binger did not get that far.

Over 70 players paid the $1,000 buy-in fee to join the poker tourney, but there could be only one winner.

Unknown poker face Jeromy McMahon of Maricopa won the event, bagging the all-important $10,000 seat at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event as well as $5,000 in cash.

The money raised will go to the Royce Clayton Family Foundation, which helps a range of good causes and helps the disadvantaged.
