Wednesday 13th February 2008 Tony G Wins Second Heat To Top Party Poker Premier League
“It’s a funny old game”, an expression often muttered by footballing legend Jimmy Grieves. The turn of expression seems equally applicable to poker, with the two leaders from Day One having very mixed fortunes on Day Two. Whilst De Wolfe huffed and puffed his way to last, Tony G won his second heat on the bounce to open an early lead on the pack.
The third heat in the 2008 Party Poker Premier League saw Vicky Coren, Andy Black, Marcel Luske, Roland de Wolfe, Ian Frazer and Juha Helppi taking their seats for the six-handed mayhem. De Wolfe collected ‘nil point’ as the first player to bust, after his AQo lost out to Frazer’s pocket tens.
Frazer was next using the exit after flopping top pair and a flush draw on a Ac-Kh-6h flop. Andy Black had him outkicked with AJo, but with the flush draw as well he decided it was time to commit to the hand. When an Ace came on the turn, all the money went in, but Black was able to fade the hearts and the eights in the deck to knock the Englishman out in fifth.
Defending champion Helppi so far hasn’t been able to get into his stride, and when he went out in fourth, he would have been disappointed not to have collected more points in Day 2. This time he fell pray to Luske, but the Dutchman didn’t last much longer himself after his massive draw with bottom pair and a flush draw against Black’s top pair didn’t get there. Luske picked up third spot as a result.
Heads-up between Black and Vicky Coren was a short-lived affair, with Black fading another massive draw. This time Coren hit middle pair and a flush draw against the Irishman’s top pair, but again the turn and river helped Black, letting him pick up first place, with Coren settling for second.
The star of Heat 4 was Tony G, who made it two wins out of two, beating a table which included Alex Kravchenko, Phil Hellmuth, Eddy Scharf, Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott and Annie Duke. Ulliott went out in sixth, with Annie Duke following three hands later in fifth.
Next out was Phil Hellmuth, who ran into Tony G, who called Hellmuth’s short-stacked shove blind. Hellmuth tabled Ah-4d, with Tony peeking down at Qh-Jh. The flop brought a queen, with the turn and river offering no help for ‘The Poker Brat’.
Three-handed play was a competitive affair, with Alex Kravchenko being the first to falter, his pocket fours being outdrawn by the two overs of G. Heads-up between Tony G and Eddy Scharf came down to another all in push and a call, with Scharf being behind with Q-8o against Tony’s A-Jo. The doorcard Ace was good enough for Tony, and he took down his second win of the season.
