Churches set for holy Hold'em

While private poker nights are banned in South Carolina when money is at stake, the state is set to allow churches to hold fundraising poker nights.

In the name of charity, a Senate committee has approved a bill that will allow churches and other non-profits to organise certain card games in order to raise funds.

For 200 years card games have been outlawed across South Carolina, as they are thought to be a game of chance - and therefore a form of gambling.

But under the new bill, Texas Hold'em can be played for charity purposes as well as five-card draw and seven-card stud.

If the bill is approved by the entire Senate and the House, South Carolina could even see charity casino nights take place, which is something that the South Carolina Association of Non-profit Organisations wants.

"If it raises money for a charitable cause, then I don't have a problem with it at all," Senator Paul Campbell told the Post and Courier.

He was part of the committee that approved the bill and said that none of the members were opposed to the idea.

However a fly in the ointment could be Governor Mark Sanford, who opposes any form of gambling for any purpose.
