Lovestruck poker fan bets on proposal

A poker player from Queenstown, New Zealand, put his whole future at stake on the turn of the cards at a poker tournament.

According to Mountain Scene, Michael Westra promised to propose to his girlfriend, Yvonne Gray, if he was triumphant at a poker tournament in Dunedin.

After he put two queens down on the table at the southern Texas Hold'em poker competition, he knew that he would have to follow through on his pledge to his girlfriend, an accountant at Queenstown Lakes District Council.

But he had a lot of time to plan a getaway, as the tourney took nine hours to finish.

However, around 30 locals turned up to support Mr Westra, so he couldn't get out of it even if he had wanted to.

And the $3,500 prize pack he won will come in handy as Mountain Scene said he was looking at diamond rings after his beloved accepted his proposal.

It is not known whether the trip to Auckland for the New Zealand finals that he also earned for his victory will be the couple's honeymoon.
