Lessons learnt from poker book

Writer Lisa Johnson Mandell has said she has learnt lessons from a poker book that never made to the retail stores.

The author of the more successful How to Snare a Millionaire was in the middle of writing a girl's guide to poker when it was discovered that The Badass Girl's Guide to Poker has been published by fellow writer Toby Leah Bochan.

Ms Mandell said that during her ten-year career as a writer she has learned some valuable lessons about how to sell non-fiction to a publisher.

On her FilmStew.com blog, she urges budding poker writers not to write a book until it is sold to the publisher. In fact, a book proposal should be sent to a literary agent first and letting them do the job of approaching the publisher.

"Only put together a proposal that includes a summary, an outline, a bio, a marketing plan and a sample chapter or two. The editor will give you invaluable input as you write your book on to how to shape it for maximum sales impact," she states.

"Chances are if you write an entire manuscript, you will then face the unwelcome task of having to rewrite the whole thing."

Ms Mandell's print work has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Forbes and a number of magazines.
