WPT Foxwoods Classic Heating Up

The first two days at the WPT Foxwoods Poker Classic was card-based carnage. Of the 346 who sat down, only 75 of them made it back for the third day of play at the Connecticut casino. Day Three would see a full five levels of poker, or until there were down to the final 18.

The money saw the top 40 getting paid out and play until then was slow. Hand for hand play lasted 25 minutes before Svetlana Gromenkova was the unlucky lass to leave empty-handed. Other notable names who were lost on the way to the bubble were John Juanda, Kathy Liebert, Young Phan, Erick Lindgren, Nam Le, Alan Goehring, and Barry Greenstein.

The field now only contained a smattering of pros, including Paul Darden, Ted Forrest and Joe Simmons. The three of them spent most of the day working their way towards to the top of the chip counts, with Darden having a particularly eventful day. At one point he was almost all in for his tournament life, before building his stack to 304,000 after his set of jacks snagged all the chips of from his opponent with a set of tens. The hand sent Darden on a spree of chip gathering while many around him were folding their way to the money.

The other big story to have emerged from Foxwoods so far is the charge of Raj Patel, the defending champion. Patel has been playing well, and is close to the chip leaders as he hopes to become the first player to win back to back championship events on the World Poker Tour. He ended the night on 670,000, which means he is in third position coming into Day Four.

Here’s the top ten leaderboard:

1. Allen Bari: 814,500

2. Eddie Ting: 672,500

3. Raj Patel: 670,000

4. Paul Snead: 595,000

5. Joe Simmons: 485,500

5. Robert Richardson: 485,500

7. Benjamin Zamani: 460,000

8. Michael Farris: 447,500

9. Paul Darden: 440,000

10. Erik Seidel: 417,500
