Online Qualifiers Compete For Country

Five amateur online poker players are getting the opportunity this week to compete alongside some of the best in the business thanks to virtual casino PartyPoker.com and its Poker Nations Cup in Cardiff.

The Alderney and Gibraltar-licensed site announced that its VIP online qualifiers are playing with some of their nation’s best at the third annual event in the Welch capital.

The tournament features six-person teams from Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Sweden, Holland and the United States battling it out in both group and individual competitions for a chance to take home the top prize of $100,000. Each team with the exception of the United States, where online poker is illegal, includes one qualifier alongside five world-class professionals from the same nation with a buy-in of $5,000 each. When added to the $100,000 donated by PartyPoker.com, the total prize pool for the event in Wales has come in at $280,000.

Over six heats, each player is competing once to score points for their team with the individual match winner scooping $20,000 for their efforts. All six teams will then compete in a ‘tag’ final with the size of their opening chip stacks determined by the points gained in the six heats. Each team captain’s judgement is vital as it is up to them to make tactical substitutions and call strategic ‘time outs’ and the winning nation will be the last with a player standing.

Last year’s event saw Sweden triumph over the United States in the ‘tag’ final while Great Britain took the glory the year before. PartyBets.com makes Sweden three to one favourites to win again this year with the United States second with odds of seven to two. Great Britain is third favourite followed by Ireland and Germany with Holland having the highest odds at 13 to two.
