Chiu takes down WPT Championship

David Chiu is $3,389,140 richer this week after winning the World Poker Tour (WPT) Championship on Saturday night.

Chiu entered the heads-up at a significant disadvantage, as opponent Gus Hansen had accrued a huge chip lead after knocking out Jeff King, Tommy Le, Cory Caroll and John Roveto single-handedly.

However, the Chinese player managed to overcome the near six-to-one deficit and win the biggest tournament of the year so far.

Hansen was later quoted by ThePlayr.com as saying Chiu played far better than he expected, although he felt disappointed at losing after a near faultless performance.

"I made one single mistake the entire final table and it wasn't a big one. I feel I played great poker," the Great Dane remarked.

With the victory, Chiu enters Card Player's player of the year rankings in fourth position on 2,880 points, while Hansen and Roveto move up to joint-12th and 15th respectively.
