Danish Poker Federation Bring Home The Bacon

In a move which could have major implications for a whole range of European countries trying to ban private Poker clubs, news that the Danish ban is to be reviewed has been well received by the Danish Poker Federation. Is this the start of a new era?

While it may be a little too soon to bring the Poker tables out of storage permanently, the decision by the Danish Supreme Court to “revisit” the earlier ban is encouraging. The ban had been authorised by the Landsretten courts (the second highest legal entity in Denmark) but there appear to be flaws in the arguments against private Poker clubs.

At this point in time we do not know the basis for the possible rule change by the Supreme Court, although historically they have only ever called Landsretten rulings in for review when they have disagreed with the outcome. The move to the Supreme Court affectively suspends the earlier ban and will allow Danish private Poker clubs to open again in the knowledge that they cannot be prosecuted – at least for the time being.

Assuming that the future ruling by the Supreme Court goes in favour of the Danish Poker Federation there may be implications for other countries in Europe that have undertaken similar measures.
