Why Cant Hollywood Catch The Poker Atmosphere?

The recent release of the much hyped and long awaited Poker based movie, ‘Deal’, went down like a lead balloon with the general public. The movie had been billed as Hollywood’s answer to criticism of past attempts to capture the atmosphere and suspense of a real Poker game but it has nose-dived, taking in only $35,000 over its first weekend. So what next?

While ‘Deal’ had a star studded cast led by Burt Reynolds it seems as though even the old pro of the silver screen was unable to save the dire script. This failure, after so much expectation prior to the release, has dented the confidence of Hollywood to actually get a decent Poker movie off the ground. As yet there are no plans for a ‘Deal 2’ or any other Poker movies but who knows what the future holds?

The failure of this movie has only highlighted the fact that the atmosphere and suspense which Poker creates cannot be manufactured. The turn of the card, the flick of an eye and the chase for the pot have a unique feel and sense of suspense that even the best actors in Hollywood find difficult to replicate.
