Friday 27th June 2008 WSOP Event #45 $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. Day 2: The Pace Quickens
There was still plenty of play come the end of Day 2 at the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship event, but for a few the cumulative loss of pots began to form an insurmountable hurdle.
While others have edged themselves towards the chip lead, the end of the road came for some of poker biggest names. Those who won’t be winning this year’s prize event include:
Ted Forrest, Mike Matusow, Chris Ferguson, Howard Lederer, Gus Hansen, Todd Brunson, T.J. Cloutier, Freddy Deeb, Annie Duke, Jennifer Harman, John Juanda, Johnny Chan, and Patrik Antonius.
One player who had a tough day in the office was Greg Raymer. Fossilman is well known as a very well rounded poker technican, adept in various forms of poker and not just hold’em. This event was particularly harsh to him, after he suffered an outdraw at the hands of Alexander Kostritsyn for a huge pot, before he was finally eliminated by his one time nemesis Mike Matusow. The day’s beats proved to be too much for the normally serene Raymer, as he tore his final card in half before leaving the tournament area clearly on the warm side of steaming.
While one World Champion left with the poker hump, another established himself as a serious contender for the bracelet. Should Doyle Brunson win this event, it could possibly be the crowning moment of his illustrious poker career, catching Hellmuth on eleven bracelets in this, the toughest of events according to his peers. Dolly is certainly running well at the moment, and spent most of the day camped in the top ten on the leaderboard. Even in a field as stellar as this, it would take a cold heart not to be cheering Brunson on to his eleventh title.
The field is now down to 67, with the overnight chip leader being Lyle Berman. Brunson is joined in the top ten by some of the game’s brightest talents, with Daniel Negreanu, Erick Lindgren and a certain young man called Justin Bonomo all keeping pace with Berman.
