Thursday 18th September 2008 Are we seeing the WSOP affect increasing traffic?
While we reported interest in poker sites after the demise of Lehman Brothers it appears that there may be more to this story than meets the eye. All of the major poker sites have recorded increased traffic numbers – with some seeing in excess of a 30% rise in September alone – so what is happening? How is poker going against the grain?

There are many ideas as to why we have seen a sudden spike over the last few weeks, Lehman’s demise, WSOP, WCOOP and a general increase in interest. While WSOP is probably one of the main reasons why the surge has continued for so long there is also some interest in the proposed law changes which the US authorities are looking to push through.
We covered this issue yesterday, whereby Congress is currently debating a Bill which will see online poker brought back into the fold but possibly on the back of a stricter regulatory regime and an increase in taxes paid to US authorities. This relatively low key move has hit the news wires and it seems to have ignited substantial interest in the game again, even though many US citizens are affectively playing on illegal sites (this is also a reason why the US authorities have decided to act now).
