Sunday 21st September 2008 Germany bans online poker
In a move which is sure to put Germany at loggerheads with its EU counterparts it has been announced that online poker is officially illegal in Germany and those who are caught may well be prosecuted. While in reality there are many online poker operations available in German and there have been no prosecutions as yet it seems that the government may be starting to turn against the online poker community.

Even if those found playing online poker are not prosecuted by the authorities there are concern that some of the more rogue elements of the online poker industry wall be looking towards Germany to try and make a fast buck – but how?

Those who play online poker in Germany and actually win may well find it very difficult to obtain payment from many of the overseas sites which offer a service. These sites could try and hide behind the fact that officially, if not unofficially, online poker if illegal in the country. As a consequence there is very little chance of the poker sites being sued in a court of law because in reality the potential prosecutors do not have a legal case to present.
Playing poker in Germany could be a lot more risky than you might ever imagine!
