Sunday 21st September 2008 Will any other country follow the German ban?
While we covered the German ban on online poker in one of our earlier posts there are concerns that other EU countries may look to follow suit, possibly arguing that they need to protect their home markets in the event that online poker groups start to look away from Germany. But will it happen?

The EU has a very firm and definitive competition and movement policy in place between the member states and this extends to the trading of businesses as long as they are located within the EU. Any member found flouting or ruling against the regulations will likely see itself investigated by the EU regulatory bodies.

While no other country has followed the German move as yet there is a feeling that we may see a hardening of the position in other EU member countries. This is perhaps the main reason why the EU is at loggerhead with the US authorities over the rights of online gaming companies – poker companies in particular.

Many suspect that it will be only a matter of time before the EU target the online gaming groups for extra taxes or tighter regulations and licenses, etc. Germany may well have let the cat out of the bag and started a rather large ball rolling!
