Tuesday 23rd September 2008 Poker is officially deemed a sport by UK authorities
In a strange move which will no doubt attract a lot of attention and criticism is has been confirmed that while the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld a complaint against an advert by an online poker company it has actually deemed that poker is a sport. This now opens the doorway to much controversy and discussion the length and breadth of the UK.

The ASA upheld the original complaint regarding the description of poker as a sport, not because of the reference to a sport, but because of the use of words such as ‘courage, conviction and confidence’ to glamorise the sport of poker. The advert in question starred the well known Daniel Negreanu who is a popular and well know figure in poker circles.
In reference to the declaration that poker is a sport, the ASA highlighted the fact that poker is a game of intelligence, tactics, judgement and nerve which when put together place the game above other forms of gambling such as roulette wheels. This is an argument which has been ongoing for years with poker even being mentioned as a possible Olympic sport of the future.
