Tuesday 23rd September 2008 Online poker star wins big
A player who honed his poker skills playing online has won a lucrative land-based tournament in Atlantic City.
Vivek Rajkumar defeated a strong field of card sharps at the Borgata Hotel & Casino in the American gambling region to win the Borgate Poker Open and more than one million dollars in prize money.
His total earnings from the triumph were $1.4 million (£750,000) and the victory may prompt the poker world to sit up and take note of the new star.
In a statement following the tournament, the host venue claimed that Rajkumar represents a "new breed" of poker player and before the competition began he was "fairly unknown".
The player's online poker skills "proved valuable during aggressive play against top contender Sang Kim, an eight-time tournament winner and black belt Taekwondo instructor", the casino added.
Earlier this month, InsidePoker magazine editor Dave Bowden suggested that the so-called "new breed" of internet players may be the ones to watch in this season's European Poker Tour.
