Thursday 25th September 2008 Skill based poker set to avoid the US online ban
The latest trend in the US, while the authorities decide whether to reinstate online poker, is skill based poker. While an obvious take on traditional poker this is a game which is classified as a skills sport with no luck involved, and already confirmed as legal by states such as California and New York. So what is it and how does it work?

As far as the gambling side is concerned you still have a pot and the winner takes all but the players involved in the game are dealt identical hands and use packs which are identical – i.e. the cards dealt will be the same. This skill version of Texas Hold’em leaves the decisions with the players and allows each player to use their skill and judgement to decide what to do. So will it catch on?

The game has had some great feedback from trials and there are a number of major US investment firms looking into the industry. The fact that it avoids the current ban on online gaming, thereby ensuring that funds can be transferred using debit and credit cards, is essential and opens up a new income stream for the poker industry as a whole.

It may actually be the introduction of this form of poker which will see traditional online poker return sooner rather than later.
