Saturday 27th September 2008 Can you really teach somebody how to play poker to the highest level?
As the online poker industry continues to bloom and attract more and more new players to the arena we are seeing the emergence of new and exciting names in the industry, names which have appeared from nowhere and hit the tables with a bang. The last few years has also seen the opening of many online poker ‘schools’ where players are taught how to play the game and improve their skills. However, is it possible to teach a novice how to play poker to the highest level?

In all honesty this s a question which has been asked of many sports in the past and it now seems to be the turn of the poker industry. While nobody refutes the fact you can teach anyone the basics of poker there is a divided opinion as to whether you can insert the killer instinct into a player, the determination and skill to spot a weakness and exploit an opponent. As the old saying goes ‘you can take a horse to water but you can’t make it drink’ - well this seems to ring very true with teaching poker.
It is possible to lay the ground work and give someone a basic education in the sport but whether you can instil the will to win, the nerve needed or the skills to read an opponent are very much open to debate.
