Tuesday 30th September 2008 Is TV and IPTV the way ahead for live poker?
News that the World Poker Tour and TV group FSN have joined forces paves the way for yet another poker TV series on our screens. So is this the new medium for the sector of just a way of increasing advertising revenue for the groups involved?

There is no doubt that poker on TV has increased in popularity even over the last two short years - with many suggesting that the WSOP is the main kicker behind the new phase in the sectors growth. We have seen subscription sites appear in many local poker markets, we have seen poker teach-ins but few can match the power that the TV stations of today hold.

However, there is a feeling that many of the poker groups, such as the World Poker Tour, are actually looking much further into the future when IPTV becomes the norm across the world. IPTV is basically TV via your broadband connection and while it will be open to literally anyone, many poker groups are already in the process of pairing up with established TV production companies.

As the IPTV sector continues to grow and becomes more popular, it will be the quality of the output which will set the different services apart from one another – something which is vital if live poker is to succeed.
