Is slow playing poker a form of cheating?

As poker becomes ever more popular around the world a debate has opened up with regards to what is known as "slow playing poker". For those unaware of slow playing poker this is an agreement or a choice which a poker player makes not to bet against or push a friend or family member out of the game. It may also mean someone who takes pity on a fellow player but it has caused a lot of controversy within poker circles. Is it cheating or is it just being friendly?

A number of professional poker players have stepped into the debate in the belief that it is actually a form of cheating because the game is artificial when players are not playing to their full potential. By letting one person away with a potential bad hand or a bad deal this places the emphasis on the other players, one or more of whom will lose out. In the real world friendships should be left behind when you sit down at the poker table, or play poker online, as it is literally a dog eat dog world out there and it is vital that every player plays the hand in front of them to the benefit of themselves and nobody else.
