PokerStars is the world’s most successful and popular online poker site, whilst Olympic Lyonnais is one of the most historical and more popular football clubs throughout the whole of France. What is the connection? Well they have just agreed upon a sponsorship deal, in which PokerStars hopes to see its name spread further throughout the country.

Olympique Lyonnais was established way back in 1950 and has since become one of the most successful French clubs in recent times. Though they only managed fourth in the league last season, they hold the record for winning seven consecutive titles between the years 2002 and 2009.

With regards to their popularity, it is estimated that around eleven percent of the country supports the club, which puts it in equal second place with Paris Saint Germain behind Marseille in first.

PokerStars have decided to take the opportunity to make the most of the clubs popularity to further increase its own in the region. As part of the deal, all supporters of the club will be able to take part in daily tournaments which will award them the chance to meet the players during training sessions, win tickets to some of their matches, team merchandise or even tickets to allow them to play in bigger events on the site.

The sponsorship deal also allows the poker site to have advertising all around the clubs stadium “Stade de Gerland” and have commercials very own television channel called olweb.fr. A spokesman for PokerStars, Mark Stuart announced that this is just the beginning and that there are many more ideas in the pipeline with regards to what the new partnership will bring.

This is far from the first foray into the sporting world by PokerStars, with them having a habit of sponsoring some of the world’s best sporting celebrities, much like with Boris Becker and Rafa Nadal who are both on the books with Team SportStars at the site.

PokerStars are continuously looking at ways to further expand their brand and are never happy to sit on their laurels, which goes a long way to explaining just why they are the biggest poker site on the planet.
