Robbie Renehan Takes Down The LAPT Columbia

Despite there being five Columbians sat at the final table, a Brazilian and a Spaniard, it was actually an unknown qualifier from Dublin, Ireland who won this event. Robbie Renehan managed to surprise everybody to take home the 2012 Latin American Poker Tour Colombian National Poker Championship title and winners cheque of $147,877.

This year saw a few changes to this event, as they decided they wanted a smaller field because last year was a very tight squeeze on the floor. They achieved this by upping the buy-in for the tournament, in fact more than doubling it from $1,100 to $2,500.

This action was successful in reducing the field from 681 the previous year to a much more spacious 337. Of those entrants there were 48 who made it into the money, with a selection of Team PokerStars Pro’s such as Angel Guillen who finished in 47th and Humberto Brenes finishing in 22nd.

The 29 year old Robbie Renehan actually qualified through the PokerStars site and had only previously managed to win a total of $6,000 in tournament winnings. Just by making the final table he was guaranteed to at least triple that in one tournament, however his ambitions were to not just settle for that, he wanted the win.

He played very well on the final table; he was extremely patient in the early phases and waited for a few eliminations before he started to make some action for himself. He then took out one player himself which gave him enough chips to start applying some pressure on the remaining players.

Having made it all the way to heads up, he was now up against the Brazilian player Jayr Fregona. The final hand coming when Fregona moved all in whilst holding an Ace-Eight, Renehan of course quickly called as he was holding pocket Queens. The ace never materialized for Fregona and Renehan was crowned the new LAPT Columbia champion, going home with the first place winnings of $147,877.

This new format proved a huge success and the next stop on the tour is at the Veneto Hotel and Casino in Panama. It starts on the 26th September and will run right through until the 30th, for anyone that thinks they can do the same as Renehan and win after qualifying online at PokerStars; they will again be holding regular satellites.

We will again be ready to give you all of the information, action and winners from the next LAPT, so if you are interested to see what happens, be sure to keep coming back to check out what’s going on.
