Suarez Bite Costs Him Poker Sponsorship

contract shredded

If you have you might have heard about a big story during the World Cup where Uruguay and Liverpool FC striker Luis Suarez bit the shoulder of Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini when their two countries played out their group match against each other.

Whilst the referee took no action in the match against the player, the furore afterwards has seen him kicked out of the World Cup, banned from football for four months for both club and country and hit with a fine of £40,000.

Whilst many that do not follow football will perhaps think that this all seems a bit harsh, you are probably not aware that this is the third time in his career that he has bitten an opponent player during a game.

He was signed from Dutch club Ajax by the English club Liverpool whilst already serving a seven game ban for biting PSV player Otman Bakka back in 2010. Then just last year in April he was given a 10 game ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic during a league encounter.

Many have taken the opportunity to create memes and shared them across social media sites and whilst they are certainly funny, they just go to prove how much hype this incident has caused all over the world.

So much hype in fact, that one of his sponsors have decided to end their contract with him. One such sponsor was 888poker, which were quick to try and distance their brand from the football player.

A statement on their website read:

“888poker signed Luis Suarez following a fantastic season for which his achievements were widely recognized, regretably, following his actions during Uruguay’s World Cup match against Italy on Tuesday, 888poker has decided to terminate its relationship with Luis Suarez with immediate effect.”
