UKIPT Edinburgh Day 1a – Batey Heads The Order

The UK & Ireland Poker Tour saw its 2013 campaign get off to a start yesterday, with the first stop being in Edinburgh and bringing a field of 254 players to the first flight of Day 1. They had to see themselves past eight levels of poker action, before seeing the field reduced to 114 that would be heading into Day 2.

This UKIPT Edinburgh is now set to be the biggest ever held, with the field almost certain to be more than 500. It just goes to show the growing popularity of poker in the United Kingdom.

Though the chip leader is currently Liam Batey with 115,400 of them bagged up for the night, it is the UK poker pro David Vamplew in second place with 106,200 that most people will be keeping an eye on. He is currently ranked as the UK’s fourth best tournament player and will want an early season win to kick start his 2013.

He is actually a former winner of a UKIPT event, with there also being other former winners in the field. He achieved his second placed stack with a late burst up the rankings; first he managed to hit a set of jacks on the river in one hand and then won a coin flip for 60k.

Barzantny Out!

One player that many were looking forward to see was the young German who made a dramatic impact on the tour late last year. Waojtek Barzantny won his place on the final live table in the UKIPT Online event, came to Bristol, won that table and then went on to take part in the UKIPT Bristol Main Event and beat out 550 players to achieve a double whammy.

However, he was one of the casualties yesterday along with other names such as PokerStars Team Online player Dale Phillip. Phillip eventual succumbed to an opponent’s pocket jacks when he was holding the pocket queens.
