WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star Day 1a – Medici Edging It

Stack of chips

The World Poker Tour kicked off some more poker action last night as the WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star again attracted the big names to fight it out for a major title and some large payouts. The event being held at the Bay 101 Casino in San Jose, California attracted a field of 312 players for Day 1a, though come the end of the day that number had been reduced to 117.

The players had to endure ten levels of action at the felt and by the time those had finished it was Giorgio Medici that was just edging it at the top of the chip counts. His haul of 254,600 chips was just enough to put him ahead of Hai Tran who amassed 253,500.

Among the bigger names that have done well enough to progress into Day 2 are Jason Koon, Dominik Nitsche, Matt Salsberg, Marvin Rettenmaier, Antonio Esfandiari, Joe Hachem, Sorel Mizzi, Faraz Jaka and PokerStars Team Pro Eugene Katchalov.

There were plenty others that were not so lucky though and found themselves among the 195 that were eliminated on the first flight of Day 1. They all still have the chance to buy back into the event on Day 1b though so the likes of PokerStars Team Pros Daniel Negreanu and Randy Lew, Mike Matusow, Mike Sexton, Scott Seiver, Phil Hellmuth, John Juanda and Jake Schwartz will all be considering just that.

Day 1b starts at the same time of 11am PT today and will see another bunch of hopefuls attempting to progress deeper into the event. We expect many of the eliminations on Day 1a also to buy back in so the field should be considerably larger than the one we just saw. Join us for an update on proceedings tomorrow.
